At Teatro Nescafe De Las Artes

in Santiago, Chile

November 16th, 2015

Last show of the South American run, and last with this lineup. Serious gel in the band. Unbelievable crowd. Outlier rocks. The only performance of this with Jamison on drums. He and Bullock bring the energy. Marcelo brings in Binky on his own. Shaun brings the crowd in with an organ solo. The outro goes D’Angelo and simmers. Mark and Jamison get churchy on What About Me? and Jamison gets displacement-happy on the solo. Justin dials up a crazy patch on Young Stuff. Michael, Jamison, and Bill really get into it, swinging during the bass solo. The crowd keeps a pulse while Marcelo jumps all around it on pandeiro for the start of Tio Macaco. He and Jamison take their time in conversation on the solo. Shaun turns the crowd up on Sleeper and drops some Eurythmics. The band encores with Lingus as Bill calmly transitions from mellow textures to rhythmic punches. The second encore features Justin on Shofukanwith a beautiful solo on trumpet. The crowd won’t stop. The band drops some go-go. Shaun blames it on the alcohol. Lots of energy from the crowd and band throughout. Very cohesive overall. And very fun.

At Niceto Club

in Buenos Aires, Argentina

November 15th, 2015

A much-anticipated gig for the band. Marcelo’s hometown show. Crowd is turned up from the beginning. Things ease in with Flood. It’s fast. Justin burns through it with a long synth solo. Jamison gets atmospheric and then takes things over the top. Skate U hints at go-go. Shaun gets churchy on organ and Bullocks goes dirty on the outro. The crowd rocks some palmas for Bill’s intro on 34 Klezma. Kite has loads of vibe. Maz phrases over the first vamp. Michael takes the outro solo on bass, starting slow and spacious before developing into longer swinging lines. The set picks right back up with a rock-heavy What About Me? The crowd almost drowns out the band on the chorus melody. Mark moves from a clean-toned rhythmic approach to a driven chordal build. Jamison eats it up. He gets into inner rhythms on the outro solo. Shaun gets the crowd to belt out Thing of Gold. Justin takes a warm trumpet solo on the bridge. Shaun detunes an oscillator and gets weird on the main solo section before prompting the crowd to sing “Happy Birthday” to Mike Harrison, the front of house sound engineer. Marcelo gets some shine at the top of Tio Macaco on pandeiro. The crowd drowns out the horns on the melody entrance. Jamison and Marcelo run through duple and triple meters in a beautiful percussion exchange. The crowd chants “Marcelo!” Hilarious. Mark goes right into Shofukan. Lots of hype. Justin calms things down with a lyrical solo on trumpet. Jamison and Marcelo take it out. The band plays Lingus for the encore and the crowd provides vocal accompaniment throughout. Bill takes the whole solo on piano, working up from legato lines to rhythmic chordal stabs. He finishes it out on synth. The crowd sings the horn solis! For the second encore, Shaun owns Sleeper with Argentinian vocal assistance. He takes it all the way up. Amazing energy throughout.

At CRR Konser Salonu

in Istanbul, Turkey

November 9th, 2015

Last night of the European tour and this configuration of the band. A very special night in a beautiful old theater overlooking the Bosphorus. Amazing crowd and great sounding room. Things ease in slowly with Kite. Maz takes a soulful solo on flugelhorn. Bill keeps things mellow on the outro. Things change direction with Bent Nails. Bullock and Justin take horn solos. Binky has a heavy feel and rocks out. Bullock and Maz really get in on it and Justin drives the bus on Moog bass during the outro. Bob takes things down on What About Me? and the band builds it back up slowly. JT gets a standing ovation after his solo. Justin sings over Thing of Gold on Moog. Nate intros Tio Macaco on bells and snare and locks with JT on the percussion feature. Bill sets up Ready Wednesdaydelicately and the band goes house for his Wurlitzer solo. The 7-piece Turkish percussion ensemble Defjen (led by daf legend Tarik Aslan) joins for a deep encore of Shofukan. They take the intro on their own. Super powerful groove throughout. Things break down to Defjen and the Turkish crowd singing. We can’t let it go. Overall, a really beautiful night. Loads of juju throughout, especially the encore.

Featuring special guests Defjen on Daf.

At La Cigale

in Paris, France

November 8th, 2015

Helluva crowd, helluva gig. Bill, Justin, and Nate kick off Whitecap with a funky staccato keyboards. The theme continues throughout. Serious vibe on the breakdown. Bill bops on Rhodes. The band flips old tune Celebrityas a New Orleans second-line. Maz gets in on trumpet. Justin sings on trumpet during Kite. Michael takes a spacious bass solo on the outro.Outlier rocks. Bullock and JT get into some beautiful interactions in the middle. The band drops Ø for its French debut. Bob rocks the octave fuzz and whammy on the first solo. Bill phrases his butt off on Rhodes. Justin takes it home on lead synth. Michael brings in Binky dub-style with JT and Nate. The crowd claps an accompaniment in 7/4 and 6/4 for Bullock’s solo. The outro goes Busta. Nate gets melodic on cowbells to bring in Tio Macaco. The band ditches the original groove and gets in it. Nate and JT do some mind-reading on the solo section. Justin brings things home with a beautifully-woven string of notes on Sleeper.  The band plays a heavy-handed Shofukan and Justin floats beautifully over the top of it on trumpet. Nate and JT take it out with a serious groove in the last minute of the show. Beautiful night.

At Nasjonal Jazzscene (Late Show)

in Oslo, Norway

November 7th, 2015

Last of the four Oslo shows. A very special one. Loads of energy from the crowd. Flood starts off gently until Bill and JT take it through the roof. Bent Nails is fast and funky. Bullock takes the first solo and Justin plays over the outro vamp on trumpet. Both new tunes make appearances. Ø is grooving. Bob turns on the Fuzz Factory, Bill glides through on Rhodes, and Justin takes it home on Moog. Binky starts with a seriously deep dub vibe and returns to it under a solo from Maz. Bullock owns the second section and the band goes D’angelo for the vamp out. Justin takes Nate’s cowbell pattern for a ride in the last vamp in SharktankShofukan breaks down for a solo from Maz on trumpet. Michael and JT set up Quarter Master medium-tempo and funky. Very chill vibe on this one. On the solo section, the band slips into a groove that gets deeper and deeper. Bill dances over it, going back and forth with JBs horn exchanges. Maz gets filled with the spirit and takes the mic. Serious mojo on this one. The band takes it out with the melody and then reprises. The crowd demands Lingus for the second encore. Bill and Michael trade and Bob puts it to bed. Long set full of loads of great moments.

At Fermaten

in Herning, Denmark

November 3rd, 2015

Danish debut for the pups. Sold-out show packed full of young people. Loads of energy from the audience and the band. Maz’s birthday! Hottest show of the tour- easily 90 degrees and wet like a rainforest. Flood is slow and funky. Justin phrases on Moog. Bullock, JT, and Justin stir the pot on Outlier. JT sets up Skate U with a deep groove and the band fits right in. Maz plays over his own tune. The band hits a new vamp on the outro and Bill digs into it. The new tune gets a name tonight! Ø, which later turns into GØ. Bob, Mike, and Justin play over it. Bullock and JT get weird on What About Me? and JT takes it home. Justin takes the Moog lead on Thing of Gold. Nate gets melodic on Tio Macaco. Ready Wednesday goes from James Brown to slow jam. The crowd turns up forShofukan as Justin guides the band through on trumpet. Sweaty, funky, a little sloppy, and a helluvalotta fun in all.

At Mojo

in Hamburg, Germany

November 2nd, 2015

Last show of the German leg. Sold-out show for 800 people in a small, loud room. Sharktank starts things off briskly. Bob rocks an elongated, patient solo on the outro. Binky hits a deep dub groove and Bill takes his first solo ever on it. Bullock plays on the next vamp and the band quickly takes it out. Maz comes out of the gate swinging on Kite and Justin stretches on Moog over the outro. Bent Nails is fast and funky with a bass solo to finish it off. Whitecap is especially funky tonight with JT and Nate swinging the hell out of it. Maz duels with them on flugelhorn. Bullock, Bill, and Justin go in on the new tune. Shofukan feels great with a killer trumpet solo from Justin. Bill takes a long, beautiful intro on Ready Wednesday, which is slow and funky. Bullock and Maz trade on the solo section. Justin closes the evening with some fire on Sleeper.

November 1st, 2015

Straight out of the gates with a brisk Bent Nails. Maz breaks out the wah-wah on trumpet. Bill phrases through the outro on Rhodes. Bullock takes an effected solo on Outlier with Justin’s synth egging him on throughout. Bob gets dirty on the new tune, GØ. Bill grooves the bridge on Rhodes and Justin soars over the outro on Moog. What About Me?goes to new places with Maz and Justin exploring new harmonic and sonic places. JT takes it home with a long, beautifully developed drum solo. Bullock plays over a grooving Thing of Gold and Justin takes it out on Moog. Bob rocks and Young Stuff and Michael gets interactive on a frumpy Young Stuff. Justin takes Shofukan on trumpet to close out the set. Nate and JT go double-time on the ending. For the encore of Lingus, Bill pulls out some tricks on the rubber Roli Seaboard and moves to synth for the outro.

At Schlachtof

in Bremen, Germany

October 31st, 2015

Halloween. One of the best feeling gigs of the whole tour. First time ever in Bremen, so we had no idea what to expect. Packed house in a nice, cozy room compared to some of the larger venues earlier in the German tour leg. Opened Halloween with an appropriately creepy Sharktank. Bob takes a solo that’s more sound than notes. Bill leads the band into a super down-tempo version of 34 Klezma. The band sticks into the groove and stays there. Crowd is so receptive that more new material is tried out. Maz takes a flugelhorn solo on Skate U and Bullock gets dirty on the outro groove. Bent Nails is fast and tight. Bill plays on the first solo section. Justin starts a long trumpet solo with a few choruses of the jazz standard What is This Thing Called Love? and the horns join in with some recognizable quotes. Whitecap is quick and funky, starting with just Bill and Michael. Maz drops some Thriller motifs and the band toys with them for the remainder of the song. Sleeper is funky with Justin on Moog. The band encores with Bill and JT leading the way on What About Me? Beautiful Rhodes/drum set duo moments and a powerful drum solo. Second encore gets the crowd really interacting with Nate burning through the end of Shofukan. Michael takes a rare bass solo on Lingus. Overall, a very special show.

At Huxley's Neue Welt

in Berlin, Germany

October 30th, 2015

Very cool set in the German capital. Nate starts it off with a melodic conga intro to Binky. Bob rocks the first solo. Maz starts things off clean then moves to the wah. The outro goes Jaco. Justin phrases over Floodand JT swings. Bullock wails over the first solo section in Kite and Bill reins it in on a beautiful outro. JT sets Bob up with a serious groove onWhat About Me? and Bob runs with it. The amp sounds like it’s about to combust. Justin gets syncopated with the outro and JT thrashes through it. Maz and Justin phrase through Thing of Gold. Tio Macaco is quick and funky. Nate and JT talk on the extended percussion duo. Bill sets up a slower, funkier Ready Wednesday with a piano intro, then moves to Roli for the solo. The band encores with Shofukan. Justin develops some beautiful melodic ideas on trumpet. Nate and JT go ham on the outro. The crowd brings the band back out with the hook from Shofukan. JT takes it and goes drum-n-bass. It morphs into Quarter Master. Michael stretches the time and the band goes shuffle. Maz grabs the mic and drops some JB. Bill gets funky on Rhodes and the band takes it out. Messy but really fun.

At Ampere

in Munich, Germany

October 29th, 2015

A nice sounding and feeling set. The band has hit its stride. First time in a big room in München after years in the jazz club Unterfahrt. Bill and Justin start out Whitecap with some percussive playfulness. Bill swings through the vamp on Rhodes. JT kicks off Skate U on his own with a lumpy groove on the deep snare. The solo section drops to nothing and Justin gets lyrical on Moog. Bullock owns the outro on tenor FX. Bill sets up 34 Klezma and Bob rocks over the vamp. Ø is quick and funky. Maz turns on the drive and wah for a crazy trumpet solo. Michael jumps around between the Rhodes bassline for a solo on the bridge. Justin soars over the outro on Moog. Bullock gets aggressive with the ring modulator on What About Me? as JT powers behind him on toms. JT jousts with Justin on the outro. Thing of Gold is grooving. Maz plays over the bridge and Justin develops a theme over the solo section. The crowd starts Tio Macaco with handclaps and the band joins in. Nate and JT get into some rhythmic insanity on the percussion solo and accelerate into a breakneck tempo. Sleeper closes the evening. Justin uses the melody and stretches from there. Mike and JT set up a fast Quarter Master. Bill owns this one. He takes the solo section on his own with the crowd providing the pulse. He sets up a new chord progression and the band jumps in on it. The band cooks and takes it out.

At Im Wizemann

in Stuttgart, Germany

October 28th, 2015

Really nice show in a brand new venue in Stuttgart. What About Me? comes out fast and screaming. Bill takes a percussive solo on Rhodes. JT smashes the ending. Binky starts smooth and dubby. Justin takes the first solo on synth. Maz takes it out on flugelhorn. The outro vamp goes knee deep and beyond with Bill driving the bus on keys. The band creates a loop. Bullock goes slap-delay on Kite. Justin takes his time on the outro with a warm Moog solo. Maz stretches on Outlier. Bob goes all out on Young Stuff. Michael dials up a fat distortion sounds and gets in it with Bill and JT. Bullock plays on the bridge of Thing of Gold and Justin weaves through the solo on Moog. Bill gets expressive on Roli Seaboard for the solo on Lingus, then moves to piano, then synth. The band returns for an encore of Shofukan and the crowd won’t let it go. The band goes right into Ready Wednesday. Bob dials up the Fuzz Factory and and gets ugly. Lots of vibe on the outro as things decompress to wrap up the evening.

At Alte Feuerwache

in Mannheim, Germany

October 27th, 2015

First show of the German tour leg. Big, beautiful old fire-station-turned-venue called Alte Feuerwache (“old firehouse,” shockingly). Packed house of over 800 people for the Mannheim Jazz Festival. This gig is all about Bill. Bob solos over a very slow, groovy Flood. Justin gets playful on Moog during Strawman, and Bill jumps in on the the final solo section, which opens up more than usual. Maz weaves in and out of the harmony on Kite, and Michael goes back and forth with Nate on the outro solo. Bullock and JT get into it on Outlier. First time the new tune Ø has really felt good all the way through. Fuzz solo from Bob and one on Moog from Justin, with a beautifully-phrased Rhodes play from Bill on the bridge. JT and Nate burn the tempo of Tio Macaco near the end of the solo. Justin finds a hemiola and develops it endlessly to take Sleeper through the roof at the end of the set. Michael grooves with the audience at the front of Quarter Master, which has a slow swag all the way through. The solo section turns into a spontaneous D’Angelo medley with Brown Sugar and Left and Right quotes. Bill eggs it on.

Justin phrases through it on Moog. Bullock gets nasty on the outro with some pedals. Bent Nails is fast and funky. Bill takes the first one. Maz and Justin trade on trumpet over the outro. Ø is funky. Bob goes nuts with Fuzz Factory. Michael works the envelope phaser on a bass solo over the bridge and Justin sings on Moog to take things out. Bullock takes the solo on a slow, groovy 34 Klezma. Maz plays over the bridge in Thing of Gold and Justin phrases beautifully on Moog. Nate and JT crank the tempo up on Tio Macaco. Bob rocks on Young Stuff. Michael, Bill, and JT get into a rhythmic conversation on the outro. Shofukan grooves. Justin owns on trumpet. Bill sets up Ready Wednesday for the first encore. The solo section gets super funky with an understated house groove. Bill plays over it on Roli, then moves to piano. At Zilina Jazz Days Festival

in Žilina, Slovakia

October 24th, 2015

A small theatre gig in the beautiful town of Žilina. Things ease in with Bring Us the Bright. Bill starts on Rhodes and Bob picks up where he left off. Nate sets up Strawman on congas. Justin dials up a dancey synth sound and takes a harmonic approach before switching to Moog. Maz gets lyrical on Kite and Bill dances over the ending on piano. Ø is patient and groovy. Bullock lights it up. Michael gets playful on the bridge with a bass solo and Justin takes it out on Moog. Bob spaces out on What About Me? as JT kicks a 16th-note groove underneath. He breaks out the octaver and JT disects the drum solo with some unbelievable rhythmic ideas. The crowd starts off Binky with some polyrhythmic hand claps. Bullock and Justin (on trumpet) play over the two solo sections. The band goes P-Funk on the outro. For the encore, Bill sets up Ready Wednesday. JT and Michael hit a mean house groove on the solo and Bill goes two hand unison on keyboards. The outro gets moody. Really nice set overall.

At Bratislava Jazz Days Festival

in Bratislava, Slovakia

October 23rd, 2015

Slovakian debut at the Jazz Days festival. Justin starts things off with a Moog solo on Flood. JT swings through the drum solo. First time ever playing the new song Ø. It’s a bit fast and messy but with good energy. Michael gets rhythmic on the bridge and Justin takes it out on Moog. Bill sets up 34 Klezma and Bob gets weird with an octave pedal. Kite has a great vibe. Maz takes the solo on flugelhorn. Bill takes his time on piano for the outro. Bullock gets dirty on the What About Me? solo with some instigation from Justin on Moog bass. JT destroys the outro solo. Thing of Gold feels nice. Maz drops a Jill Scott quote and runs with it. Justin opts for Human Nature and develops it on Moog. Bill opens Ready Wednesday with a long intro and the band comes in grooving. Things get house in the middle and Bill takes it away on Roli Seaboard. For the encore, Justin gets lyrical on trumpet during Shofukan. JT and Nate duke it out to close the show.

At CSJF

in Prerov, Czech Republic

October 22nd, 2015

First show ever in the Czech Republic. Super warm audience. Venue was a beautiful old ballroom better suited for a string quartet, so we had to really play to the room. Lots of dynamic contrast and space left for soloists. Bring Us the Bright makes a a rare appearance. First time JT had ever played it. Bill takes the solo on Rhodes. Justin messes with some oscillators on Binky and Michael takes a solo at the end. Bullock plays over Kite and Bill takes the outro. Maz comes out of the gate screaming on Bent Nails and Michael takes a long bass solo over the vamp. Bob, JT, and Justin get into a serious groove on What About Me? Justin takes the lead on Sleeper and Maz weaves his way through Shofukan. Really fun, and very different, kind of show.

At Palladium

in Warsaw, Poland

October 21st, 2015

Killer show with a super warm crowd. Maz comes out of the gates firing on an uptempo Bent Nails. Bullock takes his time over the New Orleans outro. 34 Klezma is slow and groovy. Bob gets weird in the middle. Justin goes analog on Skate U. Bill gets soulful on Rhodes for the outro. Bob and JT are fire on What About Me? Bullock plays over the middle of Young Stuff and Michael gets ugly with the octaver in conversation with Justin’s Moog bass on the outro. Things get funky as Bob and Michael get creative with bass notes. Nate goes in on Tio Macaco with JT right beside him. Justin takes the reigns on Sleeper and takes things to space on Moog. Quarter Master is slow, funky and swinging. The band sits in it for a while before the horns jump in to trade. Justin plays beautifully over the vamp in Shofukan and the backline gets funky on the outro. The crowd won’t let it go. Bill goes right into Ready Wednesday for a second encore. Serious groove. Bill takes the Roli Seaboard for a spin on the solo section and provokes some crowd interaction. More killer house grooves as the band takes it out. Loads of mojo on the outro.

At De Oosterport

in Groningen, Netherlands

October 18th, 2015

Last show of the Dutch run in the beautiful venue Oosterport. Also the last gig of the tour for Cory, Sput, and Mark, as they rotate out the next day and Bob and JT join the party. Lots of new things happening on the stage tonight. Binky starts with an extended percussion introduction from Nate and Sput. It goes shuffle. Justin and Bullock take the solos. The outro hits a serious groove with help from Michael Jackson. Things transform into Skate U and Cory lets loose. Bill turns the outro groove to Jamaica. Michael jumps in. Mark takes a tour of 80’s rock on What About Me? Justin rips through the bridge to Thing of Gold on trumpet and Cory takes it out on Moog. Nate and Sput get into some new stuff on Tio Macaco. Bill pushes the band into a different groove on Ready Wednesday. Cory develops a theme on Lingus and stretches. One of his best performances.

At Parkstad Limburg

in Heerlen, Netherlands

October 17th, 2015

Second Dutch gig. Small, southern town of Heerlen near the German and Belgian borders. Very calm and diverse crowd. Abridged version of Intelligent Design to start the night. Sput and Nate get into it. Bill jumps right in with a rhythmic (and harmonically deceptive) intro to 34 Klezma. Mark works the pedal tone. Justin takes the reigns on Sleeper. Cory goes old-school on Bent Nails and the horns drop in the bridge from Atchafalaya. Bill takes the solo on Flood on two different keyboards. Nate and Sput get tangential on the outro. Local hero and Metropole saxist Leo Janssen sits in on Outlier and plays some crazy, deep stuff. Huge sound. Cory goes in on Thing of Gold. Mark gets 80’s on What About Me? with a harmonizer. Encore is Shofukan with Justin on trumpet.

At Tivoli Vredenburg

in Utrecht, Netherlands

October 16th, 2015

Almost 2 years to the day that we recorded the album We Like It Herein the same city. First time playing an actual live show in Utrecht. Decided to do the full album (minus Jambone due to massive guitar retuning) from top to bottom. Shofukan turns things up. Nate and Sput rock the outro. The band toys with the time in What About Me? and Mark explores rhythmically and harmonically. Justin owns sleeper on Prophet synthesizer. Chris and Sput duke it out on Outlier. More drum and percussion telepathy on Tio Macaco. Cory dials up some new sounds and takes Lingus to outer space. An uptempo Quarter Master gets interrupted by the same groove from Bristol (earlier in the tour) and the band goes ham. Lots of back and forth between the horns and rhythm section. Messy, funky party for the last 25 minutes. Great night in a special city.

At Ancienne Belgique

October 14th, 2015

Rowdy crowd in Brussels at the beautiful Ancienne Belgique. The band creeps in one at a time for a fast, funky Whitecap. Justin takes a percussive solo on Prophet. Cory sets up Skate U mellotron-style. Bill takes it over on Rhodes, then synth. The band hits a groove on the vamp and Bullock plays over it. Maz and Sput get into it on Outlier. Mark sets up Flood with an unaccompanied intro and Cory plays over a sharply accented solo section. Sput and Nate go ham to take it out. Mark gets chordal on What About Me? and Sput lets loose at the end. Justin takes it out with a playful solo on Shofukan. For the encore, Michael sets up a slow, funky Quarter Master. Serious groove throughout with loads of interplay between the horns and rhythm section. Cory preaches on Moog. Messy and fun.

At Théâtre Municipal

in Tourcoing, France

October 13th, 2015

Really special gig. Beautiful old theatre full of music lovers from 8 to 80 years old. The band is playing sensitively to adapt to the room. Lots of restraint and patient throughout. Bill starts things off on Bring Us the Bright and 34 Klezma back to back. Bent Nails is funky. Bullock takes the first solo and Cory and Michael goof off over the vamp. Cory sets up Flood with a lesson in harmony. Justin takes a muted solo. Nate and Sput duet before taking it out. Cory owns Thing of Gold on Moog. Justin gets crazy on Prophet during What About Me? and things get funky. Sput, Justin and Cory duke it out over the drum solo. Bill sets up Ready Wednesday on Rhodes and piano and things go house for a long time before Mark’s solo. Serious grooves throughout. Shofukan gets hood for the first encore with Maz taking the trumpet solo. Nate and Sput take it home. For the second encore, Michael does a brief solo bass version of the old southern spiritual Wade In The Water. It slowly melds into a down-tempo trance which becomes the backdrop for Quarter Master. After the form, the band returns to the initial groove and sits in it for a 19-minute version of the tune. Things build under Mark’s solo, and Michael takes it out with one last reprise of the spiritual. The band can’t let it go and neither can the crowd. Loads of mojo in this gig.

At Le Bikini

October 12th, 2015

First time in Toulouse. Surprise sold-out crowd of 1,400. Lots of energy and interplay throughout. Straight out of the gate with What About Me? as Mark channels his inner rockstar. Slow jam on the first verse and drum solo. Binky goes metrically-relative hip-hop. Justin takes the first solo on Prophet and talks with Nate and Sput. Bill steps out on Rhodes during the vamp. Bullock takes the middle section of Young Stuff, and Cory finishes it off on Moog. Bill jumps right into a groove on 34 Klezma. Chris is patient on Outlier, alternating between effects and clean mics. Justin takes synth lead on Thing of Gold. The bridge grooves. Tio Macaco hits a pocket and stays there with great interplay between Sput and Nate at the end. Justin gets tasty on Shofukan. Crowd demands Lingus for an encore and the band obliges. Some nice, different groove stuff from Sput on Cory’s solo.

At Le Rocher de Palmer

October 11th, 2015

Sput and Nate kick off the set with a synchronized intro to Strawman based off of one of their own tunes. Justin takes a percussive synth solo and Mark burns through the ending. Cory sets up Skate U with a mellotron throwback. Bill takes the solo on Rhodes and Mark picks it up on guitar. The outro vamp gets stupid funky and Bullock goes effected. Adventures in harmony with Cory on the outro to Bent Nails. Justin goes cool on Kite. Michael phrases with the band on the outro. Bill and Sput build a vibe on What About Me? and Sput takes it out. Uptempo Binky with full-on solos from Bullock and Maz. Really crazy slow groove before the ramp-up. Outro goes Atlanta. Ready Wednesday blends afro-beat and house with Justin on trumpet. Cory gets crazy with chords on Lingus, then moves to Moog to take it out.

At Théâtre Novarina

October 10th, 2015

Beautiful night in a quaint theater on the shore of Lake Geneva, with Switzerland visible in the distance. Very mixed crowd in terms of demographics, so a varied and restrained set. Maz and Mark start the evening off with solos on Kite. Bent Nails is slow and funky. Bill and Cory trade on the outro and the band goes old-school. Bullock plays on Outlier. Mark sets up Flood and the solo section gets funky under Justin’s synth solo. Sput and Nate bounce off of each other and take it home. Bill intros 34 Klezma on the rubber Roli Seaboard keyboard and Maz takes the solo on trumpet. Justin picks up the horn for Young Stuff and Cory takes the outro solo with a harmonic departure. Ready Wednesday is slow and goes quasi-Caribbean. The band encores with Thing of Gold for the first time ever. Quarter Master is straight down the middle. Michael takes the solo on bass and the horns take it out with the tune’s hymn.

At L'observatoire

in Cergy, France

October 8th, 2015

First gig of the French run. Show eases in gently with Intelligent Design for its first appearance of the tour. Loose but playful. Maz takes a solo on muted trumpet and Mark picks it up from there. Nate and Sput get crazy on the vamp. Cory sets up a Skate U remix. Michael takes a bass solo goaded by Bill and Sput throughout. Cory takes his time on the next vamp and Marks gets funky over the outro. Justin brings in Whitecap 70’s science documentary-style and Cory goes all over the map with a reharmonization later in the tune. Bullock and Cory play over Kite, which ends up uncharacteristically explosive. Bill owns the solo on What About Me? starting contemplatively on Rhodes and then getting extremely percussive on synth with the help of Justin on Moog bass. The band changes directions and improvises new hits under Bill, then going straight out into Sput’s solo. Michael, Sput, and Nate toy with the intro the Quarter Master, which is the highlight of the night. The solo section breaks down to keys and guitar and things gets funky. Justin rides over the top of it on trumpet. Serious groove when the band re-enters. More simmering and funky keyboard playing. Lots of messing around, led by Cory on Moog bass. Super funky. More improvised grooves. Bill sets up Ready Wednesday on Rhodes and synth pads. Really tight and funky when the band enters. Some silliness with the crowd for the encore, then Lingus. Egged by crowd claps, Cory starts dark and aggressive and takes it through the roof. A messy gig overall, but loads of great moments and exploration.

At Concord 2

October 7th, 2015

Last show of the UK tour. Intimate club right on the seafront. Nice to be back in a cozy room after some very large venues over the last week. Deep cut set! Took the opportunity to play some older and lesser-played tunes. Intelligent Design makes its first appearance of the tour. It morphs into a dubby vibe after some interplay between Chris and Michael. After Mark plays on the bridge, Sput and Nate take a duo solo to close it out. Cory takes a Moog solo on Outlier for the first time, prompting some harmonization from Justin on Rhodes. Michael intros Celebrity, and Justin takes the solo on Prophet. First verse of What About Me? goes slow funk. Chris takes the solo on effected tenor. The tempo drops back down for a crazy double-time solo from Sput on the outro. Cory leads Thing of Gold. Ready Wednesday features Justin and Maz trading on trumpet. The band drops out and things get crazy. The band encores with Slow Demon for its first performance of the tour. Mark and Sput take it out by themselves.

At Hammersmith Apollo

in London, United Kingdom

October 6th, 2015

London is always a big one. Really special night. Largest crowd of the tour (4,000) in the legendary Apollo. Loads of great energy onstage and in the audience. Last gig for Marcelo until the South American leg, and the only show of the tour with two percussionists (Nate joined the tour that afternoon). Justin and Mark fire it up early on Strawman. Bill takes a grooving, patient Rhodes solo on Flood and Sput pushes the band around. Bent Nails is super funky with the extra percussion. Cory takes runs the B3 through loads of different soundscapes. Maz taunts Mark on the microphone and then saves him on What About Me? after an electrical failure. Mark swoops back in and finishes it out. Cory really sings on Thing of Gold. Marcelo intros Tio Macaco on pandeiro, and the groove drops in at a slower, funkier tempo than normal. The band rides it. Nate takes the solo over the heavy groove of Sput and Marcelo. Cory closes it out with Lingus. Justin owns Shofukan on trumpet. A second encore brings the band back to the stage for a quick version of Quarter Master with Londoner Bill Laurance saying goodnight to hometown crowd on piano.

At O2 Academy Bristol

in Bristol, United Kingdom

October 5, 2015

Sold-out crowd of 1,100 in Bristol. Easily 90 degrees in the club. Sweaty, super fun set. Mark takes a soulful solo on Bent Nails. Maz plays on Outlier. Justin and Bill do a switcheroo on the front of 34 Klezma, with Justin taking a percussive Rhodes intro. Mark intros Flood beautifully, and Cory takes things to outer space on Moog. Sput and Marcelo work their way into an incredible groove just before the outro. Hip hop sample heaven. The band tries out Sharktank on the Bristol crowd and Justin freaks out the outro solo. Thing of Gold reels it back in, with Cory taking the lead. Bill grooves the middle of Young Stuff, and the outro bass solo gets into uncharacteristically funky territory. Mark, Cory, Bill, Justin, and Michael hit a serious unaccompanied pocket in Quarter Master. Leads to the deepest groove of the whole tour. The band goes ham. That persists for a while. What About Me? goes slow funk for a verse. Cory takes the Moog intro crazy sonic territory and locks with Sput to close out the set.

Amazing crowd. Lots of fun despite the tough sonic environment (hiiiiiigh ceilings). Two encores for the first time in months. First and only time opening with Quarter Master. Loads of energy right out of the gate. Super fast. Really funky. Bill gets soulful on Rhodes. Loads of space. Crowd sets up the groove for Binky and holds it. Bullock gets dirty and Justin takes his time on trumpet. Outro goes P-Funk. Comes back for serious drum and percussion pocket. Straight into a straight Skate U. Bill gets tasty on both Rhodes and synth after. Mark takes his time on the outro groove. Crazy, chaotic intro to Whitecap. Reharmonization from Cory and a killer solo from Bullock. Maz bops on Kite. Cory dances through the outro and it gets funky. Bullock and Sput get in it on What About Me? Ready Wednesday gets funky and Justin owns on trumpet. Shofukan gets the crowd insisting on a second encore, and Cory plays over an up-tempo version of Lingus.

At O2 ABC Glasgow

in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

October 3, 2015

Packed house in Glasgow. By far our most attentive, subdued Scottish crowd. It brings out a more patient, mature side of the band. Maybe the most relaxed and creative show of the trip. Sput starts off the set solo with a killer groove on Strawman. Justin gets crazy with a weird flute patch on Prophet. The last section goes Minneapolis. Mark plays a beautiful intro on Flood, and the tune goes Motown. Cory takes his time with a piano solo. Bill sets up 34 Klezma. Michael, Cory, and Sput get playful during a bass solo on the end of Bent Nails. Maz gets weird with delayed trumpet on What About Me? and the band builds a deep groove beneath. Sput goes crazy on the outro. Justin takes the bridge on Thing of Gold on trumpet and Cory brings it home on Moog. Marcelo intros Tio Macaco on pandeiro. First time ever ending a show with Justin’s tune, Outlier. Bullock dials up a dirty sound for the solo and uses feedback as a friend. Justin wraps up the encore of Shofukan with a lyrical trumpet solo.

At The Ritz

in Manchester, United Kingdom

October 2, 2015

Despite fighting against a very ambient room, one of the better shows of the tour thus far. Cory owns this one. Skate U hits a serious groove. Justin and Chris start things off beautifully. Maz solos for the first time on Outlier. Justin takes a rare solo on Kite, and Bill stretches on the outro. Whitecap is all about Cory. Crazy reharmonizations followed by a soulful, expressive solo. Bass and audience intro on Celebrity, with Mark running through the sonic gamete and Maz toying with a vocal solo at the end. Marcelo and Chris get into some new stuff on the intro to Tio Macaco. Cory turns the room out with an extended, emotional solo on Lingus- unquestionably the band’s favorite to date. Bill changes the tone on the encore with a long, beautiful intro to Ready Wednesday. Crazy, funky solo section with Chris and Michael weaving between each other. Overall, one of the more inspired performances of the tour.

At O2 Academy Leeds

in Leeds, United Kingdom

October 1, 2015

Great sounding room. Amazing crowd. Best show in a while, and the first one with the new additions (Sput, Bill, Mark, Marcelo, Cory) in which the band feels really cohesive. A chant of “Yorkshire” from the audience prompts Bill into a 4/4 intro of 34 Klezma. The band cooks up a new groove on the outro to Bent Nails underneath soulful trumpet playing from Justin. After a reprise that sparks trading from Cory and Bill, Cory sings on Thing of Gold. Mark, Cory, and Sput mix it up on What About Me? and Sput takes a patient but explosive solo. The band hits a groove on Young Stuff and Michael talks with the band on the outro to Young Stuff. First live performance of Sharktank with Sput and Justin absolutely owns the final solo. He switches to trumpet for loads of theme and variation on Shofukan. Michael takes the intro to a slow, funky Quarter Master and the crowd jumps in. Mark takes things way up. The band stumbles into a groove during introductions and sits in it.

First show with Sput on drums in a long time. Beautiful, big hall on the UCLA campus. Great sounding set. Justin kicks off the night with rhythmically motific Rhodes solo on Flood. Sput stretches within the pulse. He and Nate get reacquainted. Lots of vibe on the Binky intro. Bob rocks the first solo. Jay weaves in and out and takes the band into space. Things go slow-jam. Shaun runs the outro. Sput and Nate explore a bit. Bent Nailsis fast, but tight. Shaun swings with an organ solo. Kitefeels great. Jay takes a super lyrical flugelhorn solo and talks with Sput. Justin takes his time on Rhodes over the outro and things get funky. Maz gets weird on What About Me?with an effected-trumpet-with-harmon-mute solo. Sput and Shaun get Dallas on the outro. Justin grooves the solo on Shofukan. Shaun ends the night with a crazy percussion duel on talkbox with Sput to close out Sleeper. So much great energy on this one.

At Belly Up

in Solana Beach, California

September 23rd, 2015

Nice, small beach-front club in California. Last show with JT on this run and he’s on fire. Justin stretches more than ever on Rhodes during Strawman. Bob gets chromatic. Young Stuff makes an early appearance. Jay takes one in the high range. Shaun takes his time on organ with a super dynamic, expressive solo on the vamp before switching to Moog and lighting it up. Whitecap swings. Chris rides it out with JT and Nate. Jay bops on flugelhorn in Kite with loads of beautiful double-time lines. Delay-soaked bass solo on the outro. JT crushes Outlier. Chris gets playful. JT flips the groove on Thing of Gold. Maz goes out on the bridge. Shaun tells a story on Moog and closes it with an organ outro. Justin pushes What About Me? to new sonic territory on Prophet. Bob holds it down while JT plows through the drum solo with some amazing stuff. Justin gets expressive on Shofukan with an ornament-heavy solo. Nate and JT take it out. Things almost go Zeppelin III at the end. The newest tune, Sharktank, makes its way into the encore. Bob freaks out the ending solo. The night ends with Shaun doing up Lingus on talkbox.

September 17th, 2015

Helluva day. Bus broke down in Pennsylvania. Barely made it for the gig, but still a great vibe on stage. Bullock takes Whitecap on his own. Beautiful stuff from Jay on Kite. Outro slow jams with Justin on Rhodes. Bent Nails is fast and funky. Shaun gives an organ lesson. Binky starts dubby. Bullock screams. Go-go outro. Fast Thing of Gold. Jay rips. Shaun takes it higher. Funky, quick What About Me? Soundscapes from Bob. JT swiiiiiiings. Spontaneous bass trio action on the encore with Patitucci and Bailey which melds into Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues and goes out with Billy Cobham's Red Baron. Shofukan is hype. Justin sets ‘em up and Shaun knocks ‘em down.

Intimate room. First show with room mics in the recording setup. Great vibe from the start. Justin toys with Strawman. Bob rocks the tremolo system. Shaun opts for harmonica on Skate U. Jay burns through a sloppy/fun Whitecap on his own. Chris owns Kite. Lots of stretching on the outro. Fast, super funky Bent Nails. Justin takes the outro on trumpet. Mind reading with JT, Bob, and Shaun on What About Me? Maz takes Shofukan. Shaun takes it home on his own with Sleeper.

Late show on Justin’s birthday. High energy from the start. Amazing stuff from him on Rhodes in Strawman. Dubby, heavy Binky. Chris sees it and raises. Maz takes his time. Lots of patience in this one. Shaun drops some Outkast on the outro. Whitecap grooves. Super funky Moog stuff on the bridge and organ antics from Shaun. Jay bops. Quirky Thing of Gold. Maz and the band get weird on the bridge. Shaun outro shenanigans and church. Bob and JT rock What About Me? early 90’s-style. The one and only Eric Gales takes over from here for very different renditions of Little Wing and Superstition from set one, plus his own version of the Star Spangled Banner. Really unbelievable stuff. The spirit descends.

Justin’s birthday. Early show. Driving, rhythmic Flood with Justin leading on Rhodes and synth. Loads of energy. Improvised outro. Chris uses feedback for inspiration on Bent Nails. Bass solo on the outro. Jay jumps between soul and bop on Kite. Dub outro with Justin pushing the band on Rhodes. Maz takes it out on Young Stuff. Really out. Shaun opts for soul synth harmonica (what?). Then organ. Things get crazy. JT and Nate do some mind reading on Tio Macaco. Eric Gales shows us how to play the guitar on Hendrix’s Little Wing and melds into Superstition- kinda. A force of nature. Jay takes his time on Lingus.

September 14th, 2015

First time at the famous Variety. Big sold-out homecoming show for our Atlanta-based sound and stage crew. Helluva crowd. Band is hitting its stride with JT, who is with us for the first time in 2 years. Shaun antics on Whitecap. Super funky Skate U outro. Beautiful, patient solo by Jay on Kite as Justin pushes the rhythm section to new places later. Shaun’s antics in full swing with incessant "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) quotes. The horn section tears through Tio Macaco. Nate and JT goad the audience on the percussion solo. Maz takes Thing of Gold way out and Shaun brings it back in. Justin lays down some Rhodes grit under Bob on What About Me? and JT freight-trains the outro. Groovier Shofukan than usual. The last two tunes are all about Shaun.
