In Memory of Rick Jonckheere

Hey everyone, it's Justin here from Snarky Puppy. As we enter into our last performance of a four-week tour with a very special collaboration with the Metropole Orkest at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, I would like to share something that is very close to my heart.

Two years ago, a young man from the Netherlands named Rick Jonckheere reached out to me to ask if he could record a song I wrote for Snarky Puppy called “Mr. Montauk” for a music conservatory audition video. Months later, he sent me the video of his band’s rendition of the song. Rick played with great confidence and passion, and he showed a lot of promise. I was very excited to see this young man develop into a great musician.

Two months ago, I received an email from Rick’s parents. They told me that, in January, Rick had unexpectedly passed away at eighteen years old of a rare autoimmune disorder called Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID). How this young man who showed so much dedication and enthusiasm for music could be gone so suddenly broke my heart.

Sadly, very little research has been done to this point which is why there was little that could be done for Rick. However, Rick’s parents, Edwin and Karin, have started a foundation in his name in order to raise money that will fund research and raise awareness about CVID. I hope that you will visit the website to learn more about the Rick Jonckheere Foundation and CVID, and - if you are able - consider donating, fundraising, or becoming an ambassador on behalf of the foundation. https://www.rickjonckheerefoundation.nl/

Friday’s performance is dedicated to Rick. With your help, out of a tragedy we can contribute to a victory.

Much love,
Justin

About

Brooklyn, NYC.

Jazz + Funk + World + Soul + Pop

Snarky Puppy is truly a different kind of musical animal.

The once Texan, now New York-based quasi-collective Snarky Puppy has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still "underground" in many respects, the band earned its first Grammy Award in early 2014 (for Best R&B Performance) and has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, Village Voice, The Guardian, New York Times, and Washington Post, as well as the world’s most respected musicians, from Pat Metheny to Prince. Their most recent album, a collaboration with the Dutch large ensemble Metropole Orkest called Sylva, topped Billboard Jazz, Billboard Contemporary Jazz, Billboard Heatseeker, and iTunes Jazz charts. The band has always used live performance as its chief form of evangelism, and over the last 8 years has maintained a more intense tour schedule than almost any band in the idiom with over 1,200 performances.
